The best of America

"… What is this thing, this sense of duty? What tugs at a person until he or she says 'Send me'? Why, in an age when so many have acted only in pursuit of the narrowest self-interest, have the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines of this generation volunteered all that they have on behalf of others? Why have they been willing to bear the heaviest burden?

"Whatever it is, they felt some tug; they answered a call; they said 'I’ll go.' That is why they are the best of America, and that is what separates them from those of us who have not served in uniform — their extraordinary willingness to risk their lives for people they never met. …."

This was part of President Obama's speech last year at the Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. Does he truly "get" what he said? Does he truly understand what Memorial Day really means? Men and women have sacrificed literally everything in order for OUR freedom. To quote him, "That is why they are the best of America..."

This year, however, he is "[acting] only in pursuit of the narrowest self-interest" (quoting him once again) and chosen not to go to the wreath laying ceremony. He has decided instead to go "home" to Chicago for the holiday. His priority as Commander-in-Chief is not to those whom he so honored last year. This year, I guess their sacrifice is somehow not as bad since going home to a backyard Bar-B-Q with some old friends is more important.

Now, I know what you're thinking. I'm a hypocrite. I too am not going to that ceremony, or any ceremony for that matter. You're right... I should pay my respects just like every other red-blooded American out there should. However, I'm also not the President of the United States. I do not have to set the example for millions of people around not only this country, but the world. He signed up for that when excepting the job and he should live up to it.

But, have no fear! Our selfless leader will be back in time to honor Paul McCartney on June 2nd at the White House. He'll be rubbing elbows with the "best of America" (by that, I mean celebrities). I can truly see where his priorities are.

I want to throw in this video because it does honor the best of America. Please take a few minutes to watch. And to all those soldiers out there, past and present... YOU ARE THE BEST OF AMERICA! You deserve the respect of every American. THANK YOU for all that you do and all that you sacrifice so that I might enjoy my life, liberty and pursuit of happiness!

Afterthought:
I wrote this yesterday and after some deliberation, I thought I should add the following info in here as well. I want to show that I don't think it's wrong just because Obama is doing it. Every president should show his appreciation for our fallen soldiers.

Reagan missed one year because he was at an economic summit. GW Bush missed it to also go on vacation... (I think I heard twice somewhere?) I really don't get why Sr. didn't do it. He missed all four, but as a WWII vet, I can see if he has some residual issues there...?? I DON'T agree with ANY OF IT... There is NO excuse for that kind of disrespect from the Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful military in the world. The president, no matter who it is, should have priorities for those who sacrificed literally everything for this great country instead of putting the country and its people down all the time. To the rest of the world and to even us Americans, it looks like he doesn't care (the other presidents as well). I just thought it was ironic that Obama had no time for the ceremony, but had to hurry back for a big celebrity hub-bub! He has shown time and time again that being on Jay Leno or American Idol, traveling the world and rubbing elbows with the "elite" are all much more important to him.

Ummmmm.....

Let me get this straight......the US is passing a health care plan that was written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it. It was passed by a Congress that hasn't read it while saying it's "good enough" for the American people but exempts themselves from it which means it's not "good enough" for them. It will be signed by a president that also is exempt from it and hasn't read it and who smokes. The funding will be administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes. All of this is to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese and financed by a country that's broke.
What the hell could possibly go wrong?

One light bulb at a time

The following was sent to me in an email and I thought I would share it. It made me think about the things I buy and how I should shop, no matter what my political stand...

A physics teacher in high school, once told the students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't slow a train very much, a billion of them would.

I was in Lowe's the other day and it I was looking at the hose attachments. They were all made in China. The next day I was in Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there too. They were made in USA.

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job.
My grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more.

My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico... now I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything ..

This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off-brand labeled, "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats -they were the same except for the price..

The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in a company in Cleveland,Ohio.

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets.... yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada. The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for every day things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

Start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies! Let's get with the program.....help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the USA!

This just in.... report of suicide

Thank you to a fellow conservative who sent this to me. Even if you do not consider yourself conservative, you *MUST* read this...

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning last November's Presidential election:

Number of States won by:
     Obama: 19
     McCain: 29

Square miles of land won by:
     Obama: 580,000
     McCain: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by:
     Obama: 127 million
     McCain: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
     Obama: 13.2
     McCain: 2.1
     (WOW!)

Professor Olson adds:
"In aggregate, the map of the territory McCain won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country. Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegal’s and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

Now that's "CRUDE"

I was sent some information in an email this morning that I think every American (democrats and republicans) should know. It's unreal that we put ourselves in these situations, then do nothing to change them. I don't know how anyone can argue this information.

Interesting facts..........

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... At $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.

"This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years," the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin, but is more commonly referred to as the "Bakken." And it stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada. For years, US oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the "Big Oil" companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's massive reserves.... And we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 2041 years straight. Did you read that correctly? NOT until the year 2041, but for over two-thousand years!

And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this next one should!

Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006

Hidden only 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world. It is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. In four years of high oil prices, not a drop has been extracted. With this motherload of oil why are we still fighting over off-shore drilling?
They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside the US borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth. Here are the official estimates:

- 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
- 18-times as much oil as Iraq
- 21-times as much oil as Kuwait
- 22-times as much oil as Iran
- 500-times as much oil as Yemen
- and it's all right here in the Western United States .

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil! Again, we are letting a small group of people dictate our lives and our economy.....WHY?

Now, all you environmentalists reading this are saying, "But we can't burn all this oil and ruin the Earth. We can't dig here because we need to save the wild life and the natural lands this would destroy."

I got news for you... We will be burning this oil anyway! We are just now paying other countries a LOT of money. We are helping their economy, not our own! We are sending jobs to them, not giving them to our own people who desperately need them. We are spending WAY too much at the pump instead of putting that money back into our economy for other products. Plus, how much extra oil are we burning just to transport all that oil from half-way around the world over to us? Wouldn't it be better on the environment just to get it here?
James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels untapped. That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.

Don't think OPEC will drop its price - even with this find? Think again! It's all about the competitive marketplace. Don't you think OPEC just might be funding the environmentalists? Don't you think they might be stuffing some pockets in Washington? Don't you think that it's easier for them to make more money that way?

Got your attention yet? Hope so! Now, while you're thinking about it .... And hopefully P-O'd, click on the email a friend below this post. Pass this information on and let's start fighting to get our own economy going again! Let's fight to put jobs back in America again! Let's fight to be independent of other countries for their oil!

By the way,  this is all true. Check it out at the link below!!!

"Ask not what your country can do for you..."

You know, I told myself when I started this blog that I would not get too political. I didn't want to turn people off  by posting what was my opinion on things, knowing that there are lots of views out there that are different than mine. Because of this, I have kept my mouth shut on many topics. I know I still put my two cents in here and there. Trust me, I've wanted to say a lot more!

I've come to realize, however, that if I don't stand up and inform as many people as I can to the truth, who will? Not that I'm the going to change every mind out there, but even if I open one person's eyes, it's worth it.

Most people trust that the government will not take advantage of them. They trust that the events on the news and in the papers are the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I know a lot of people that just live there lives expecting nothing to change, expecting their freedom to always be there. They wake up, go to their jobs, take care of their families, and try and enjoy life as much as possible. They take for granted that they have the freedoms in this country that many other countries do not provide.

If anything reminds me of this, it is veterans day. I know I shouldn't politicize veterans day; believe me, that's not what my intentions are! I just want to point out that freedom is not to be taken lightly. All of our men and woman that fight for this country are protecting that freedom by putting their lives on the line. Why should we, even for one second, take that freedom for granted? Why should we allow a government to take any of that freedom away from us, for any reason?

We have to remember that millions of people throughout the history of this nation have fled their own countries to come to ours so they can enjoy the freedoms that we take for granted every day.

The founders of this country have put it very simply in the constitution. It is OUR right AND responsibility to protect those freedoms. It talks about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It does not talk about the right for distribution of wealth. This should come with human kindness, not force! It does not talk about government taking our money and spending it unwisely only to create more government programs so they can take over another aspect of our lives. It does not talk about stimulas plans, unions and corporate takeovers. It does not talk about leaving our troops in a foreign land without the equipment that they need because the government does not want to offend those that appose the war. Every right that they take from us is one step closer to the government our founders ran from hundreds of years ago.

My grandfather fought on a Navy ship in WWII and the Korean war. He saw and did things most of us would never have the guts to do. He was away from home and family more than not until his oldest child was in her teens. He is in his eighties now, knowing that the freedom he fought so hard for for his children and grandchildren is now under attack, not by another country, but ourselves. Slowly, the government is taking over our lives, and most of us are too busy or just don't care enough to notice.

There is so much "political correctness" out there that everyone is afraid to talk about the truth. We're all afraid to put a stop to a man who is clearly an Anti-American, who for months put up one red flag after another, then released gunfire on a crowded military base. We're too afraid to stand up to politicians wanting to take our hard-earned money and  hand it over to someone else who really hasn't worked hard for anything in their life. We're too afraid to ask the real questions about abortions, gay marriages and any other "touchy" subject because we're too afraid we'll hurt someone's feelings. We're too afraid to stand up and say we want to keep our guns without the stigma of being a gun-toting hill-billy. We're too afraid to say anything bad about the president in fear of coming off as a bigoted jack-ass.

But, you know what... I'm done being afraid! I'm going to speak my mind. I'm going to tell the truth that everyone else is so afraid of saying! My friend is over in Iraq on his second tour of duty. He is there protecting our rights that we are not gutsy enough to protect ourselves. Is it all for nothing? Will he come home in a few months to a place that he no longer wants to call home? I want to make sure that does not happen.

Now, I'm not saying that we all have to agree on everything. I'm not saying that I am right on everything. I just want everyone to take a look at what they want out of life and what they want out of the government. I want everyone to go back to the roots of this great country... life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; not hand-outs, government programs, meetings, speeches and tv appearances!

I'm not saying that these problems started with this administration, or even the last couple. There are PLENTY of fingers to point! But why should we let it get any worse?

----------  ----------  ----------

The following is pieces from JFK's inaugural speech in 1961...

The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe - the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans - born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage - and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

This much we pledge - and more.

To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do - for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder.

To those new States whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. We shall not always expect to find them supporting our view. But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom - and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.

... In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.

Now the trumpet summons us again - not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are - but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation" - a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.

... In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shank from this responsibility - I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavour will light our country and all who serve it -- and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.

Guess who...

He made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics. Did you laugh?

He gave the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches. Did you think this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

He spent hundreds of thousands of (our) dollars to take his wife to a play in NYC. Did you think he was spending your money wisely?

He appoints czars that are constantly proving themselves unworthy of the position. Do you step up and say anything?

He puts our own soldiers in harms way by not providing ample supplies. Do you stand up and "Support Our Troops"?

He reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90% and gave the unions a majority stake in GM. Did you protest?

He burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on Earth Day. Did you concluded he is a huge hypocrite?

He failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans during Katrina. Did you make it into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

He gave Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVD's, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift. Did you think it was appropriate?

He was the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference. Did you laugh and say this is more proof of how he inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

He bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia. Did you think it was embarrassing to our country?

He visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent "Austrian language." Did you brushed it off as a minor slip?

He filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes. Did you think it was a mistake?

He was so Spanish illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again. Did you wince in embarrassment?

He misspelled the word advice. Will you hammer him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potato as proof of what a dunce he is?

He spends more time traveling making speeches and television appearances than actually "changing" anything. Did you ever tell him to stay in Washington and do his job?

He pushed through not only one, but two bills that give 3 billion dollars out for your "clunkers" to stimulate more economic growth in America. Did you bother to notice that now you have to pay income tax on that money if you took the deal? Or that over 70% of the new car sales included from those bills were from foreign companies, sending the money OUT of this country?

His administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic. Did you wonder whether they actually "get" what happened on 9-11?

He defended a group eligible for over $8 billion in taxpayer money who repeatedly gave advice on tax evasion, prostitution, and running a brothel for underage illegal immigrants from El Salvador. Did you think it wasn't an important story?

He ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so. Did you approve?

He doubled the national debt in less than one year, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate. Did you clutch onto your wallet any tighter?

He then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years. Did you challenge him?

So, tell me again, because I don't get it (maybe I'm the dunce)... what is it about him that makes him so brilliant and impressive?

Can't think of anything? Don't worry.

He's done all this in nine months ~ you'll have three years and three months to come up with an answer... good luck!

Scary thoughts!

On Friday, I went to the doctor for yet another check/adjustment on my meds. I just started a new med, a very common med mind you, about three weeks ago (working great, by the way). However, it is considered a narcotic by the government, so is regulated closely. For the first month, my doc only gave me enough for one month because (I thought) he wanted to make sure it was working the way it should. He faxed in the prescription about six weeks ago to my insurance and my prescription-by-mail company that I use to save money. Now, my medical insurance company wanted to send it out right away, just like the many other meds I take. I usually get the pills withing 2-4 days of being faxed in. This particular drug took 3 weeks to get in the mail… 3 weeks! Not because my insurance company didn’t like it, or my drug company didn’t like it, but because my government didn’t get their act together. It put everything on hold for three weeks… including my health and well-being! Now, of course, I wasn’t going to die without it… but come on!

It gets worse…

My doc likes what the med has been doing and wants me to continue them. So he starts up his computer, ready to write up the prescription. I tell him it took 3 weeks to get them the first time and I would rather take it to a local drug store, even if I have to pay more because I cannot wait 3 weeks to get more. I will be out by then. (A little info… it’s the refills that end up costing me more, not the original prescription.) He proceeds to tell me cost will not be an issue because he can only continue to give me one month’s worth at a time because the government wont allow refills on this med.
I asked, “So all these millions of people on this very popular, widely use drug have to go into their doctor every month to get a new prescription just because the government wants to get their hands on it? They can’t allow the doctors and drug companies to figure this out for their own patients?”

“Kinda ridiculous, isn’t it?” he asked.

There’s more…

Then he proceeds to tell me that after a lifetime carear of service with the same clinic, he is now switching to another clinic. After asking him why, he said that the ”higher-ups” didn’t like his way of doing things. This had been going on for years, and they finally got to him enough for him to leave.

Now, for those of you that don’t know my health stuff and all that I’ve been through in the last year and a half, I have to tell you that this is the ONE doctor that took me serious and took the time and energy to figure out a way to help me, no matter how long it takes. You have to also know that I went to 9 other doctors (and countless tests) before him who all gave me the boot and basically said “Live with it.” He also literally brought my grandfather back to life when he had his massive heart attack over ten years ago and he helped my mom figure out her heart issues years ago as well when no one else would. So, needless to say, I have a TON of respect for this man and his way…

After all this rambling… yes, I do have a point! I don’t think the “higher-ups”, whether it be the bosses or the government, should have any say what happens between me and my doc! I now have the right to follow him to his new clinic, which I will do even though it’s twice as far away (and I was already going 45 minutes – one way – to see him). I may not have this right if the government has a say in it with their new plan. They may tell me where to go and who to see. They will probably give me the boot, just like all those other doctors, saying I’m just fine, even thought they’ve never met me or see how I live on a daily basis. I’m not a patient at that point, I am a file, a number, a faceless dollar! They may also make it even harder for me to get the prescriptions I need. They can’t even get their act together enough for me to get my meds in a timely fashion. How are they going to run the whole system?

Another thing to think about… When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, she found the lump herself. She went to her doc and asked to check it out. He did so with a mammogram, but nothing showed up. If the government was in charge of it all, would they have checked into it further… probably not. But my mom had the brains and the right to push it further. After doing more tests, they did find a lump and, in my opinion, maybe saved her life!

How is the government going to deside what happens between my doc and me? How are they going to treat me as a person? How are they going to treat my doc – the way his bosses treated him – regulating all that he did until he leaves – for good this time? All the good doctors will be gone! All patients will be pushed aside! Everything would be run by the all-mighty dollar!

Is that what we want? I don’t know about you, but it scares me to death!

Oh, the wisdom of children!

Kids have such a simple way of looking at things. I wish we could all see things this clearly…
There was a commercial for buying/investing in gold on the radio today. It didn’t really go into detail, but mentioned how with all the government spending, inflation is bound to happen. Emma heard this commercial and said, “Does Obama want to take all your money?”

I laughed, as any conservative mom would, and responded, “Yes, he does.”

“Why?” she asked.

“Well, he’s spending a lot of money that he doesn’t have,” I responded, “and he has to use our money to pay for it.”

“Then, why is he spending it if it’s not his… that’s not fair.”

Again, I laugh. Unfortunately, I didn’t have an answer to that one… Anyone else know how to respond to a six-year-old who is apparently smarter than those that run this country?

"Reggie"

This is kinda long, but it’s a great read. Heather found it on craigslist.com.

They told me the big black Lab’s name was Reggie as I looked at him lying in his pen. The shelter was clean and the people really friendly. I’d only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.

But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn’t hurt. Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggie’s advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn’t look like “Lab people,” whatever that meant. They must’ve thought I did.

But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn’t really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike.

For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls – he wouldn’t go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth)got tossed in with all of my other unpacked boxes. I guess I didn’t really think he’d need all his old stuff, that I’d get him new things once he settled in. But it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn’t going to.

I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like “sit” and “stay” and “come” and “heel,” and he’d follow them – when he felt like it. He never really seemed to listen when I called his name – sure, he’d look in my direction after the fourth of fifth time I said it, but then he’d just go back to doing whatever. When I’d ask again, you could almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey.

This just wasn’t going to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a little too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell. The friction got so bad that I couldn’t wait for the two weeks to be up, and when it was, I was in full-on search mode for my cellphone amid all of my unpacked stuff. I remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that the “damn dog probably hid it on me.”

Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter’s number, I also found his pad and other toys from the shelter. I tossed the pad in Reggie’s direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most enthusiasm I’d seen since bringing him home. But then I called, “Hey, Reggie, you like that? Come here and I’ll give you a treat.” Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction – maybe “glared” is more accurate – and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down.. With his back to me.

Well, that’s not going to do it either, I thought. And I punched the shelter phone number. But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that, too. “Okay, Reggie,” I said out loud, “let’s see if your previous owner has any advice.”……….

To Whoever Gets My Dog:

Well, I can’t say that I’m happy you’re reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie’s new owner. I’m not even happy writing it. If you’re reading this, it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping him off at the shelter. He knew something was different. I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this time… it’s like he knew something was wrong. And something is wrong… which is why I have to go to try to make it right.

So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you. First, he loves tennis balls…. the more the merrier. Sometimes I think he’s part squirrel, the way he hordes them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasn’t done it yet. Doesn’t matter where you throw them, he’ll bound after it, so be careful – really don’t do it by any roads. I made that mistake once, and it almost cost him dearly.

Next, commands. Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I’ll go over them again: Reggie knows the obvious ones – “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “heel.” He knows hand signals: “back” to turn around and go back when you put your hand straight up; and “over” if you put your hand out right or left. “Shake” for shaking water off, and “paw” for a high-five. He does “down” when he feels like lying down – I bet you could work on that with him some more. He knows “ball” and “food” and “bone” and “treat” like nobody’s business. I trained Reggie with small food treats. Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog.

Feeding schedule: twice a day, once about seven in the morning, and again at six in the evening. Regular store bought stuff; the shelter has the brand.

He’s up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th Street and update his info with yours; they’ll make sure to send you reminders for when he’s due. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car – I don’t know how he knkows when it’s time to go to the vet, but he knows.

Finally, give him some time. I’ve never been married, so it’s only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He’s gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn’t bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially.

Which means that this transition is going to be hard, with him going to live with someone new.

And that’s why I need to share one more bit of info with you… His name’s not Reggie.

I don’t know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the shelter, I told them his name was Reggie. He’s a smart dog, he’ll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. but I just couldn’t bear to give them his real name. For me to do that, it seemed so final, that handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting that I’d never see him again. And if I end up coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it means everything’s fine. But if someone else is reading it, well… well it means that his new owner should know his real name. It’ll help you bond with him. Who knows, maybe you’ll even notice a change in his demeanor if he’s been giving you problems.

His real name is Tank. Because that is what I drive.

Again, if you’re reading this and you’re from the area, maybe my name has been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn’t make “Reggie” available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. See, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could’ve left Tank with… and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, that they make one phone call to the shelter… in the “event”… to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he’d do it personally. And if you’re reading this, then he made good on his word.

Well, this letter is getting to downright depressing, even though, frankly, I’m just writing it for my dog. I couldn’t imagine if I was writing it for a wife and kids and family. but still, Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family.

And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me.

That unconditional love from a dog is what I took with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from those who would do terrible things… and to keep those terrible people from coming over here. If I had to give up Tank in order to do it, I am glad to have done so. He was my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades.

All right, that’s enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. I don’t think I’ll say another good-bye to Tank, though.. I cried too much the first time. Maybe I’ll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth.

Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight – every night – from me.

Thank you, Paul Mallory

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer.

I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog.

“Hey, Tank,” I said quietly.

The dog’s head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright.

“C’mere boy.”

He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn’t heard in months. “Tank,” I whispered. His tail swished.
I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him.

“It’s me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me.” Tank reached up and licked my cheek. “So whatdaya say we play some ball? His ears perked again. “Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?” Tank tore from my hands and disappeared in the next room.

And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

From a soldier

I just found this on the internet writen by a solder and I thought it was so well said that I wanted to share it with you…

I just want to discuss the war in Iraq for a moment. Since I have been there, I want to help everyone who hasn’t and give them a clue. First and foremost, we are working for the betterment of our fellow man. We have released these people from decades of tyranny and oppression. We are helping a people who have been kept in the dark for so long their women are illiterate and they still wipe their behind with a bare hand amongst a long list of other issues.

But where are the WMD’s? Well, lets see, finding multiple mass graves with body counts of 30,000 to 50,000 dead, I think, qualifies Suddam and his posse as weapons of mass destruction. And lets not forget all the torture chambers. So, lets put this in perspective. Two of Saddams mass graves are equivalent to the destruction at Nagasaki in WWII. And what caused that? Oh yeah, a nuclear bomb.

Well we got Saddam so we can pull out right? Let’s make reference to the war on drugs or anything really that has a food chain and a way of life people are used to. Let’s say we kill a drug lord. Do the rest of the drug runners just give up and say alright, I’m ready to lead a good and fulfilling life now? Not so much. The Iraqi people still need help rebuilding their nation.

So then comes the issue of the three thousand and some change Americans that have lost their life in the war in Iraq. That really is such a large number, but again lets put things into perspective. In the year 2000, 15,517 Americans were murdered . . . IN AMERICA. So on average, in ONE year, 5 times as many Americans are murdered in their own country than have died in the entire war in Iraq. And considering the Americans that have died in Iraq, did so making a difference, and doing what they volunteered to do, doesn’t seem so tragic. In fact, its not tragic at all. Car accidents are tragic. Dying in war, fighting to make a difference is honorable!
Fighting in Iraq is fighting for this country. For those of you who didn’t think about it, we took the fight to them so they can’t keep bringing it to us. Driving down the road wondering what is going to blow up next is not a pleasant feeling. Be enthralled you dont have to live with it everytime you start your car.

Saying you support the troops but not the war is wrong. WE POUR OUR HEART AND SOULS INTO WHAT WE DO! Telling us you support us and not what we do is telling us we did it in vain.
So before you think about being one of those liberal hippie a**-holes on the side of the road with anti-war signs, think about what’s really going on. Try picketing for better police departments or something that will help this country and the 15,000+ people being murdered here every year. Let the military do its job, it’s what we are here for. Thank you for your support. You are blessed to live in this country, as backwards as it can be.

Lie or Myth?

“The greatest enemy of truth is very often not the lie: deliberate, contrived and dishonest – but the myth: persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.”
--JFK, June 11, 1962--

“You know I’m a juggler, and I never let my right hand know what my left hand does. I’m perfectly willing to mislead and tell untruths…”
--FDR, May 1941--

Now, I promise not to get all political on my blog. But I still have to let my voice be heard on the subject every now and then because I am honestly scared of what is happening to our country. No matter what political view you have, I believe everyone has the responsibility to take a really close look at what is happening and not just believe everything the media is telling you. I think history IS doomed to repeat itself, especially if you don’t learn from it the first time around. I’ve dug up a few FACTS and want everyone to read and learn…

“It’s a rare thing in Washington for people with such diverse, different viewpoints to come together and support the same bill.”
--Barack Obama, Feb. 17, 2009 right before signing Stimulus Bill--

* Fact: House voted 246 Yea votes (all Dem.) to 183 Nay votes (176 Rep. & 7 Dem.). Senate voted 60 Yea votes (all Dem. except 3 Rep.) and 38 Nay votes (all Rep.) Way to “come together”!!

“If we do not move swiftly, an economy that is already in crisis will be faced with catastrophe.”
--Barack Obama, Feb. 5, 2009 on Stimulus Bill--

* Fact: Stimulus means immediate spending to stimulate economic growth. Parts of the “Stimulus” Bill is being spent over the next three (or more) years. Plus many of the programs in the bill are ever-lasting programs, therefore, ever-spending not just short-term, immediate spending.

*** ***

“We started this package with a healthy amount of tax cuts in the mix, recognizing that tax cuts can be very beneficial, particularly if they’re going to middle class, working families that will spend that money… They’re most likely to spend and get that money into circulation and stimulate the economy.”
--Barack Obama, Feb. 5, 2009 on Stimulus Bill--

* Fact: The average, working family will only see $13 a week added to their paycheck. Don’t spend it all in one place!

* Fact: The average unemployment check will increase by $25 a week. So, basically they’re getting rewarded (by getting twice the “tax cut”) for not working. What’s my incentive to work… or anyone’s for that matter?

Here Piggy, Piggy… I would like to know how much of it is actually going to help create jobs and help businesses stay in business and how much is just thrown in there by politicians (both Dem. and Rep.) behind closed doors, adding in their pet projects, just because they can. Keep in mind that the amount of money being spent on this bill is hundreds of billions of dollars more than 7 years of the war in Iraq, which everyone whined and complained that we could not afford. And where is this money coming from… us maybe… our children… our grandchildren??

* Fact: In a controversial move, Roosevelt gave Executive Order 6102 in 1933 which made all privately held gold of American citizens property of the US Treasury to help pay for government programs! The government bought the gold for less than 60% of what they sold it for. Those not in full cooperation faced a $10,000 fine and/or 10 years in jail. Even tho this gold confiscation by executive order was argued to be unconstitutional, gold bullion remained illegal for Americans to own until President Ford rescinded the order in 1974. Maybe that’s why Obama wants our guns first?

* Fact: Announced today (while I’m typing in fact)… taxes are increasing to cover the newly announced $3.6 Trillion budget… suprise, suprise! The next highest budget was $2.7 Trillion in 2008. This is above and beyond the Stimulus Bill. How ’bout we just give the government all our money and they can regulate exactly how we spend it, how we live, what we say, and what we believe. We will have everything we need… oh, except our freedom and liberties. (Wait, they’re already working on what we say and believe by the media! Case in point: Fairness Doctrine affecting radio – but not their puppets: the papers & television.)
